The ASSET Project (Advanced System Studies for Energy Transition) aims at providing studies in support to EU policy making, research and innovation in the field of energy. Studies are in general focussed on the large-scale integration of renewable energy sources in the EU electricity system and consider, in particular, aspects related to consumer choices, demand-response, energy efficiency, smart meters and grids, storage, RES technologies, etc. Furthermore, connections between the electricity grid and other networks (gas, heating and cooling) as well as synergies between these networks are assessed.
The ASSET studies not only summarize the state-of-the-art in these domains, but also comprise detailed qualitative and quantitative analyses on the basis of recognized techniques in view of offering insights from a technology, policy (regulation, market design) and business point of view.

Performed Studies Ongoing Studies Experts

The European Commission together with the 28 Member States pave the way to Energy Transition. All the European decisions supporting this transition represent a chance for the future evolution of Europe but a lot of challenges will need to be addressed, from a technical, economical, regulatory, cultural and societal point of view. The technical revolution in the energy sector, including the development of new technologies (RES, storage, smart home solutions and smart cities and communities, biofuels for transport) and the new ways to envisage and operate the European Energy Markets require a comprehensive understanding of their implication on the system.

The services provided as well as the topics addressed in the ASSET project help at answering STRATEGIC QUESTIONS for the energy sector in Europe and succeeding in implementing the EU’s Energy Union Strategy in its five closely related and mutually reinforcing dimensions (VRE Integration, Flexibility and Design of the electricity market, smart energy and Energy Efficency, Legilsative and Policy Framework, Social and Human Development and Research and Innovation)

The project aims at providing studies in support to EU policy making, including for research and innovation. More specifically, of the order of 50% of the effort bear on the EU electricity system in a context of an increasing share of variable renewable energy sources. Topics of the studies include detailed aspects such as consumers, demand-response, smart meters, smart grids, storage, etc., not only in terms of technologies but also in terms of regulations, market design and business models. Connections with other networks such as gas (e.g. security of supply) and heat (e.g. district heating, heating and cooling) as well as synergies between these networks are also be studied. The rest of the effort deal with heating and cooling, energy efficiency in houses, buildings and cities and associated smart energy systems, use of biomass for energy applications, etc. Foresight of the EU energy system at horizons 2030, 2050 are of interests.

The studies not only summarize the state-of-the-art in these domains, but conduct detailed analyses (including quantitative analyses) on the basis of recognized techniques.

The consortium is composed of three partners allowing providing highly qualified expertise to deal with TECHNICAL, POLICY, HUMAN AND SOCIAL and ECONOMIC analysis of the energy sector which require methodologies, modelling capabilities and experiences.

The involvement of some of the members of the consortium in utility groups provides recourse to other considerable resources from universities and industries. The consortium is understood to be a network on its own.
The consortium is capable of handling large-, medium- and small-scale assignments in all energy sectors, including all sub-sectors which are subject to the studies (ELECTRICITY,HEATING AND COOLING, GAS AND FUELS, SOCIAL AND HUMAN SCIENCE and European Union LEGISLATIVE AND POLICY FRAMEWORK).

Energy is a vital issue. Unevenly distributed and unequally consumed, natural reserves are moreover not inexhaustible. Confronted with these facts, and concerned by economic crisis and climate changes, the countries tend to change their relationship to energy: A deep and worldwide transformation in the way energy is produced and consumed is already underway and can be expected to intensify in the coming months and years. This is what is called the ENERGY TRANSITION.

In Europe this transformation took form under three main strategies that was implemented these last 4 years and that reformed the European energy sector: COP 21 (the Paris Agreement), the decision of an Energy Union, and the reforms towards a smart, efficient and sustainable energy sector (including for Transport and Buildings).

 In order to cover the complete technical and professional capacity requested for the contract, we have identified highly qualified experts who are specialised in services to be provided. The qualifications of most experts meet more than one task area, which enhances possible team compositions to best suit to Terms of References of each quick or long study. It is worth underlining that all experts are “in-house” experts, and that the consortium can react rapidly to any demands from the European Commission by setting up the adequate and appropriate project team. The project is lead by Sarah Ouziaux (sarah.ouziaux@tractebel.engie.comsupported by a Coordination and Quality Board composed of experienced representatives of the different companies involved in the consortium.






Stakeholder Management


At the level of the project, external stakeholders are invited to discuss the results of the studies, to share their experience and to learn from the conclustions of the analyses.
At the studies level the interaction with the stakeholders takes the form of interviews organized in the course of the studies when required.
